The decisions that come before the machine
The most expensive mistakes in a CNC or waterjet investment are made not in choosing the machine but in the preparation stage. If floor load capacity, three-phase electrical supply, water conditioning, compressed air, drainage and slab storage space are not settled before the machine arrives, installation slips by months.
The space calculation is often left short as well. The footprint of the machine on its own is not enough; slab in-and-out manoeuvring, forklift turning radius, the polishing and quality control area and the service clearance needed for maintenance all have to be included in the total.
When the return on the investment is worked out, most of the time only the price of the machine is taken into account. The real cost table also has to carry consumables (blades, garnet, orifices), energy, operator training and annual maintenance — an ROI calculation made without them comes out optimistic.
Compliance and safety
The CE mark is not a quality badge but a declaration that the machine conforms to the relevant directives. ISO 12100 risk assessment, ISO 13850 emergency stop and EN 60204-1 electrical safety are the headings asked about directly in an inspection and after a workplace accident.
Lockout/tagout (LOTO) is the most critical safety procedure during maintenance. Work carried out on a machine whose energy has not been isolated accounts for a significant share of the serious accidents in this industry.
Spare parts stocking, in turn, is an operational decision rather than a financial one. Which part has a long lead time, and which part's failure stops production altogether — the answers to those two questions produce the critical stock list on their own.
