Holding the Slab on a CNC Bridge Saw — Vacuum Table vs Mechanical Clamps

Holding the slab is the most basic day-to-day operating decision on a CNC bridge saw. Inadequate holding = the slab is thrown = machine damage plus danger to the operator. Good holding = accurate cutting, a clean surface and long tool life. There are two main approaches: the vacuum table and the mechanical clamp.

The Vacuum Table — How Does It Work?

There are small holes or grooves across the surface of the table, and a vacuum pump draws air through them. When the slab is laid on top of the table, atmospheric pressure presses it downwards.

  • The table — an aluminium or MDF composite structure
  • The vacuum pump — a 5-10 HP electric motor providing continuous suction
  • Holding force — atmospheric pressure (~1 bar) × surface area = roughly 10 tonnes of hold per m²
  • Leak control — the slab edges have to be sealed where necessary
  • Active surface — suction across the whole table, or zoned

Mechanical Clamps — How Do They Work?

The slab is laid on the table, and clamps (toggle clamps, screw clamps) fitted into the T-slot channels of the table press on the slab from the edge or from above.

  • The T-slot table — channelled aluminium or steel
  • Clamp types — toggle (lever), screw, hydraulic
  • Holding force — 1-5 kN per clamp
  • Positional flexibility — a clamp can be placed wherever you want it
  • Extra backing for a thin slab — timber battens or composite support underneath

Where the Vacuum Table Is Strong

  • Large slabs (3,000 × 2,000 mm) — clamping takes far too long, the vacuum holds in seconds
  • Standardised production — the same slab type over and over (kitchen countertop runs)
  • High-volume workshops — 10 or more slab changes per shift
  • Work dominated by straight cuts — few internal contours
  • A modern production line — where operator productivity is critical
  • A flat, clean slab surface — low risk of leaks

Where Mechanical Clamps Are Strong

  • Cutting small parts — the vacuum cannot find enough surface area
  • Complex internal contour work — where the vacuum would leak
  • Uneven or bowed slabs — the vacuum will not hold
  • Low-volume workshops — the investment may not be necessary
  • A traditional marble workshop — the operators are used to it
  • Simple spare parts — clamps and T-slots are standard items

The Hybrid Approach — The Most Common Modern Solution

Most modern CNC bridge saws offer **both vacuum and T-slots**. The operator chooses according to the type of job:

  • Standard kitchen countertop cutting → VACUUM (the speed advantage)
  • Complex internal contour machining → CLAMPS (no risk of a leak)
  • Small parts (calibration, prototypes) → CLAMPS
  • An uneven slab → CLAMPS plus support underneath
  • If the vacuum is leaking → reinforce with clamps
  • Emergency backup → if the vacuum pump fails, carry on with clamps
Practical Advice
If you are setting up a new workshop, a vacuum table plus T-slots is the standard investment. The extra cost is small and the flexibility is considerable. The hybrid arrangement is the modern workshop standard.

The Vacuum Table — Operator Practice

  • Clean the table surface daily (dust, garnet, fragments of marble)
  • The slab edges must be clean — rust and mud cause leaks
  • The underside of the slab must be flat — use zoned suction for a bowed slab
  • Watch the hours on the vacuum pump — inadequate suction = the slab may be thrown
  • Annual pump service — oil change, seals renewed

Mechanical Clamps — Operator Practice

  • Number of clamps — a minimum of 6 for a large slab, 8-10 for a wide one
  • Distribution — at the corners plus every 80-100 cm along the long edges
  • Clamping point — 5-10 cm in from the slab edge (so it does not foul the cut line)
  • Tightening control — a torque wrench or hydraulics (for even pressure)
  • If there is chatter during the cut — a clamp may have worked loose; stop and check
  • Replace a worn clamp pad — otherwise the hold is inadequate
