What Is a Spindle and How Does It Work?
The spindle is the whole assembly of motor + bearings + cooling system that turns the tool holder. On CNC marble cutting machines the spindle:
- Turns the diamond blade at 2,000-4,000 rpm (marble and granite cutting)
- Turns the 3D milling tool at 6,000-24,000 rpm (machining centre)
- Is cooled hydraulically or by oil circulation (temperature 25-45°C)
- Connects to the automatic tool changer (ATC)
- Is fed continuously with lubricant from the central system

Tool Taper Type
- ISO40 — the traditional taper; common for marble cutting and resistant to contamination
- ISO50 — for large and heavy tools; thick work + high torque
- HSK63 — the modern symmetrical holder; a balance advantage at high speed and fast tool changes
- HSK80 — the large HSK; for heavy work
- ER25/ER32 — the collet type; for small-diameter milling tools (common on routers)
Spindle Cooling
A hot spindle is the greatest enemy of spindle life. Above 50°C bearing life is halved; above 60°C failure follows within days.
- OIL CIRCULATION UNIT (chiller) — a closed system; the temperature is held automatically between 25-45°C
- AIR COOLING — adequate on low-power spindles, not at high power
- HYBRID — oil + air (on aerospace-grade spindles)
- Water-cooled — on some high-power systems, but with a risk of limescale and corrosion
- Cooling oil: a special formulation (usually ISO VG 32 + additives), changed annually
Spindle Warm-Up — The First Run of the Day
Warming the spindle up on the first run of the day is mandatory, so that the lubricant film forms and thermal expansion happens gradually.
- 1,000 rpm × 1 minute
- 2,000 rpm × 1 minute
- 3,000 rpm × 1 minute
- 5,000 rpm × 1 minute
- Step up in one-minute increments to the maximum working speed
- Total time: ~5 minutes (a 5-10 kW spindle), ~10 minutes (15-20 kW)
The Lubrication System
- CENTRAL AUTOMATIC LUBRICATION — the spindle + the guideways + the ball screws are lubricated by pump
- Lubricant type: lithium-based grease or hydraulic oil
- Lubricant reservoir: daily level check (operator)
- Lubricant distributors: annual blockage check (authorised service)
- Oil change: completely replaced every 12 months (by the service engineer)
Operator-Level Maintenance
- DAILY: cleaning the spindle taper (wiping off swarf and dust)
- DAILY: checking the cooling system temperature (on the screen)
- WEEKLY: watching for abnormal noise and vibration around the spindle
- MONTHLY: a general visual check (hoses + connections)
- ANNUALLY: a complete check by an authorised service engineer

Signs of Spindle Failure
- INCREASED VIBRATION — bearing wear or a tool balance problem
- NOISE — knocking, whining or crackling is abnormal
- OVERHEATING — a cooling system failure, a sudden rise in temperature
- AN OIL LEAK — the seal has worn; call the service engineer
- LOW TORQUE — the cut is slowing down and the tool does not hold up when loaded
- AUTOMATIC STOP — an alarm code, to be read by the service engineer
Spindle Overhaul — Every Five Years
A heavily used spindle (2,000+ hours a year) needs a complete overhaul every five years:
- A complete strip-down + cleaning of the internal parts
- Renewal of all the bearings (usually 4-6 of them)
- Checking the journals and renewing them if needed
- Dynamic balance setting (critical on spindles of 5,000+ rpm)
- A leak test + seal renewal
- A performance test (vibration measurement at full load)
