A Garden Hose and a UHP Pump Are Not the Same Thing
Mains water off the street meets drinking-water standards — but a UHP pump requires "low TDS, zero particles, controlled pH". The limescale, micro-particles, chlorine and minerals present in mains water wear the pump away from the inside.
- Pump piston — the piston-to-cylinder clearance is 5-10 µm. A larger particle means a micro-scratch, which means a leak
- Valve seats — 3-5 µm precision. Chlorinated water eats away at the seals
- UHP line seals — limescale build-up means friction plus heat plus early wear
- Orifice — 0.25 mm diameter. A single 50 µm particle blocks it or damages it
Filtration Stages — Four Layers
- COARSE FILTER (50-100 µm) — At the mains inlet, it separates out large sediment and sand particles.
- FINE FILTER (5-10 µm) — It holds back micro-particles, silt and limescale dust. Spiral-wound or cartridge type.
- SOFTENING (Water Softener) — Limescale (calcium, magnesium) is captured by ion exchange. A resin tank.
- RO (Reverse Osmosis) — The final step. The TDS value drops below 50 ppm. Membrane technology.

What Is TDS, and How Is It Measured?
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) expresses in ppm the quantity of minerals dissolved in water. The ideal figures for a UHP pump:
- < 50 ppm → EXCELLENT (after RO)
- 50-150 ppm → GOOD (softening plus fine filter)
- 150-300 ppm → ACCEPTABLE (wear increases over the long term)
- > 300 ppm → POOR (pump life falls by 50%)
- Measurement: a portable TDS meter is a cheap and practical tool — a weekly reading in the workshop is recommended

Symptoms — Has Your Filtration Been Neglected?
- The cutting jet is scattered and surface quality is poor → the orifice has worn (particles getting through the filter)
- Pump pressure fluctuates → limescale build-up in the accumulator and the UHP circuit
- Metallic particles in the pump oil → cylinder/piston wear (inadequate filtration)
- A white "cigarette-trail" marking on the outside of the hose → limescale build-up
- Spare parts consumption 50% higher than planned → a water quality problem

- BASIC: Coarse filter plus fine filter (mechanical pre-treatment)
- STANDARD: + A softening unit (hardness control)
