Cabinet Blasting or Portable Blasting? — A Decision Guide

Sandblasting comes in two main forms — the enclosed cabinet (inside the workshop) and the portable machine (site work, open air). Each has its own field of use, and the right choice is decisive for both workshop efficiency and occupational safety.

Cabinet Blasting — Definition

Cabinet blasting is a system in which the abrasive is propelled within a controlled environment inside an enclosed chamber, with the part either fixed in place or carried through on a conveyor. In Europe and in Türkiye it is a legal requirement when working with abrasives that carry a high silicosis risk (silica sand).

Portable Blasting — Definition

Portable blasting is equipment made up of a movable pressure vessel, a gun and a hose system, used in the open air or in large-volume spaces. The USEL EasyBlast (10 L) and FastBlast (25 L) fall into this category.

Which One for Which Job?

Choose Cabinet Blasting

  • Series production — the same part again and again (automotive sub-industry, machine parts)
  • Precise surface preparation — a controlled profile and consistent quality
  • Work where silica sand has to be used (within the legal requirements)
  • Integration with a paint line — blasting and painting in sequence
  • High volume → abrasive reclamation becomes economic
  • An enclosed workshop standard — no dust emission permitted

Choose Portable Blasting

  • Site work — bridges, ships, warehouse restoration
  • Large structures → they will not fit a cabinet
  • Low volume → a cabinet does not pay for itself

Types of Blast Cabinet

  • MANUAL CABINET — the operator holds the part through a glove window, for small parts (1×1×1 m)
  • AUTOMATIC CABINET — conveyorised, multiple nozzles, for series production (3×3×5 m)
  • PASS-THROUGH TYPE — the part enters at one end and leaves at the other; continuous production
  • LOAD-AND-REPOSITION CABINET — for large parts, with the position changed by hand
  • SPECIAL ROBOTIC CABINET — with a robot arm, for very complex parts (aerospace, automotive)

The Abrasive Reclamation System

The greatest advantage of cabinet blasting is that 70-90% of the abrasive used can be reclaimed:

  1. The abrasive settles to the floor of the cabinet
  2. Vacuum or screw collection → it is sent to the screening system
  3. Screening — grain that has broken down too far (dust) is separated out
  4. The remaining grain is returned to the silo or hopper
  5. Fresh abrasive is blended in at 30-50%
  6. The result: abrasive consumption falls by 50-70% (against portable blasting)
The Reclamation Investment
A reclamation system delivers a meaningful saving in high-volume workshops. Where production volume is low the case for the investment may not hold; it has to be assessed against the workload of the particular workshop.

Operator Safety — the Critical Difference

The Operator at a Cabinet

  • The part is held through a glove window
  • The operator is outside the cabinet, breathing normal air
  • Risk from rebounding abrasive: ZERO
  • Dust exposure: minimal thanks to cabinet extraction
  • Ordinary PPE is enough (goggles and a mask)

The Operator in Portable Blasting

  • Blasting directly with the gun
  • The operator stands inside the cloud of abrasive
  • Rebounding abrasive: a risk to the face and skin
  • Dust exposure: high
  • Full-face protection plus an air-fed hood is ESSENTIAL

The Legal Framework (TÜRKİYE)

  • Blasting with silica sand — in the open air or with portable equipment it is BANNED (silicosis risk)
  • With garnet, glass bead or aluminium oxide, PPE is essential in portable use
